Immunization
Category: Pregnancy/Birth/Other
The process by which a person becomes protected against a disease. This term is often used interchangeably with vaccination or inoculation.


Inflammation
Category: Pregnancy/Birth/Other
Redness, swelling, heat and pain resulting from injury to tissue (parts of the body underneath the skin). Also known as swelling.


ICBLC
Category: Postpartum
An ICBLC, or Internationally Certified Breastfeeding and Lactation Consultant, has passed an exam given by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and has received training to help nursing mothers and their babies.


ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection)
Category: Conception and fertility
A procedure in which a single sperm is injected directly into an egg; this procedure is most commonly used to overcome male infertility problems.


Identical twin
Category: General pregnancy
Identical twins are formed when a single egg, fertilized by a single sperm, divides (often after implantation in the uterus). This type of twinning is not considered to be hereditary, although the cause of the division is not known (and is not related to the use of fertility treatments).


Immune globulin
Category: Mom's health
A protein found in the blood that fights infection. Also known as gamma globulin.


Implantation
Category: Conception and fertility
When the fertilized egg (blastocyst) settles into the thick uterine lining (endometrium). This occurs approximately 7 days after conception.


In vitro fertilization
Category: Conception and fertility
Frequently abbreviated as IVF, this is an ART procedure that involves removing eggs from a woman's ovaries and fertilizing them in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred into the woman's uterus through the cervix.


Incompetent cervix
Category: Mom's health
Characterized by painless dilation of the cervix in the second trimester or early in the third trimester of pregnancy, with prolapse of membranes through the cervix and ballooning of the membranes into the vagina, followed by rupture of membranes and subsequent expulsion of the fetus.


Induced labor
Category: Labor and birth
The use of drugs and/or procedures in an attempt to start labor.


Intrauterine growth retardation
Category: High risk/Complications
When the estimated fetal weight is below the tenth percentile for its gestational age. There are numerous possible causes, including a multiple gestation (twins or more), a chromosomal abnormality, congenital malformation, infection, drugs, alcohol, smoking, environmental factors, maternal malnutrition or anemia. Frequently abbreviated as IUGR.


Intrauterine pressure monitor
Category: Labor and birth
An intrauterine pressure monitor is a device designed to detect and measure intrauterine and amniotic fluid pressure with a catheter placed transcervically into the uterine cavity. The device is used to monitor intensity, duration, and frequency of uterine contractions during labor.


Iron deficiency anemia
Category: Mom's health
Anemia that is characterized by low or non-existent iron stores and low concentrations of iron in the blood and that has such symptoms as pallor, mouth sores, digestive difficulties, and thin, brittle nails.


Isometrics
Category: Mom's health
Isometric exercises are exercises that cause a muscle to contract and do work while joints do not move, for example, pushing against a wall.
