Labor

The onset of regular, progressive contractions until the birth of a baby.


Labor coach
Category: Labor and birth
Usually refers to the mother's partner, but may also be a doula, nurse or friend, who emotionally, physically and sometimes spiritually supports the mother during labor.


Lamaze
Category: Labor and birth
A method of childbirth education. Lamaze International, Inc. states, "The Lamaze mission is to promote normal, natural, healthy and fulfilling childbearing experiences for women and their families through education, advocacy and reform."


Laparoscopy
Category: Conception and fertility
A surgical procedure in which a fiber optic instrument (a laparoscope) is inserted into the pelvic area through a small incision in the abdomen.


Lactation consultant
Category: Postpartum
A lactation consultant aids breastfeeding mothers and their babies. They may or may not be certified in order to call themselves a "lactation consultant" and their education and training levels vary. An ICBLC, or Internationally Certified Breastfeeding and Lactation Consultant, has passed an exam given by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and has received training to help nursing mothers and their babies.


Leukorrhea
Category: Mom's health
A common whitish vaginal discharge that often increases during pregnancy.


Lie
Category: General pregnancy
Refers to the baby's position in the uterus, based upon how the long axis (spine) of the baby compares to the long axis of the mother: Transverse (perpendicular), Oblique (angled), Longitudinal (parallel).


Linea nigra
Category: Mom's health
A brownish line appearing on the abdomen - starting at the belly button and continuing down to the pubic hair. This discoloration (linea nigra can be translated as "dark line") is caused by pregnancy hormones causing an increased production of the pigment melanin. The excess pigmentation of the linea nigra may not completely disappear


Live birth
Category: Labor and birth
Any infant delivered with signs of life after 20 or more weeks of gestation.


Lochia
Category: Postpartum
A bloody vaginal discharge occurring after delivery. Lochia is often compared to a long and heavy menstrual period.

Lochia appears in three stages: Lochia rubra is a bright red discharge and lasts for approximately three days. Lochia serosa, a pinkish discharge, next appears and lasts until approximately day 10. Finally, there is lochia alba, a thinner whitish-brown discharge which can last anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks. Lochia should be completely gone by 6 weeks postpartum.
