Ovarian stimulation

The use of drugs to stimulate the ovaries to develop follicles and eggs.


Ovary

One of the two female reproductive organs in which eggs are formed.


Ovulation
Category: Conception and fertility
The release of the egg (ovum) from the ovary. Ovulation usually occurs approximately 14 days before the next menstrual period is due.


Obstetrician
Category: Mom's health
A medical doctor (M.D.) who has completed an additional three to four years of specialized training in obstetrics and gynecology.


Oligohydramnios
Category: Birth defects
Any noticeable lack of amniotic fluid.


Omphalocele
Category: Birth defects
An omphalocele is a protrusion of variable amounts of abdominal viscera (intestines, etc.) from a midline defect at the base of the umbilicus (the belly button).


Oocyte
Category: Conception and fertility
The female reproductive cell, also called an egg or ovum.


Ovarian factor
Category: Conception and fertility
A cause of infertility related to problems with egg production by the ovaries.


Ovarian monitoring
Category: Conception and fertility
The use of ultrasound and/or blood or urine tests to monitor the development of ovarian follicles.


Oxytocin
Category: Labor and birth
A hormone released by the pituitary gland that causes uterine contractions. Synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin) may be administered to induce labor.
